ABOUT BLÜMWELL

Built from a simple idea: residents shouldn’t have to give up the things they love.

BlümWell was created to make meaningful gardening more accessible inside senior living communities — regardless of weather, season, outdoor access, or mobility.

What if residents could still have something growing nearby — something they could check on, care for, talk about, and look forward to?

The question that started BlümWell
THE FOUNDER STORY

The idea started with my dad.

Founder of BlümWell Therapeutics with his father, whose nursing facility experience helped inspire the company

A few years ago, my father spent about ten months in a nursing facility while recovering from a brain injury.

During that time, I noticed the gardens outside. They were beautiful, but not every resident could easily get to them. Then winter came, and I remember hearing residents talk about how much they missed gardening.

That stayed with me.

Gardening is more than something to do. For many people, it is part of who they are. It can be routine, memory, contribution, conversation, anticipation, and a sense of purpose.

I kept coming back to one question: why should someone have to give that up because the weather changed, their mobility changed, or their living situation changed?

BlümWell grew from that question.

01
Bring gardening indoors

Make the experience available year-round in shared community spaces.

02
Make participation more accessible

Create opportunities for seated and standing interaction.

03
Give residents something to return to

A living garden changes over time and creates natural anticipation.

04
Make it easier for staff to support

Pair the garden with guided activities, seasonal materials, and a repeatable structure.

BUILT ON EXPERIENCE

BlümWell also builds on years of work in hydroponics and AgTech.

Before BlümWell, our work through Kentucky AgriTech included hydroponic growing systems and other technology-enabled agriculture projects designed to make growing more practical, efficient, and accessible.

That experience helped shape the practical side of BlümWell — how the system grows, how it is maintained, how indoor agriculture fits into real-world spaces, and how to make the technology easier for people to use.

BlümWell takes that technical foundation and applies it to a different purpose: creating an accessible, structured gardening experience for older adults and the communities that serve them.

THE FOUNDATION
01
Hydroponic growing experience

Hands-on work with indoor growing systems and controlled environments.

02
Practical system design

Experience thinking through maintenance, usability, and real-world deployment.

03
A new application

Applying that AgTech foundation to accessible resident programming and senior living.

OUR PURPOSE

We are not trying to replace the outdoor garden.

We are trying to make sure residents still have access to the experience of growing — especially when traditional gardening is difficult or unavailable.

Growth

Watching something develop over days and weeks gives residents a reason to notice change and come back.

Connection

Gardens naturally create conversation, shared responsibility, family engagement, and moments between residents and staff.

Routine

Planting, checking, tending, harvesting, and refreshing create a rhythm that can continue throughout the year.

Contribution

Residents can participate in caring for something living and share in the results of what they helped grow.

WHAT WE'RE BUILDING

A complete resident experience — not just a piece of equipment.

BlümWell combines an indoor hydroponic garden with guided resident programming, seasonal refreshes, growing materials, and ongoing support.

The system creates the physical garden. The Garden Club gives residents ways to participate. Quarterly refreshes keep the experience changing. Staff resources help make it easier to continue.

HOW WE THINK

Built around the resident experience and the realities of senior living.

01

Accessibility matters.

A meaningful activity is only meaningful if residents can actually participate in it.

02

Staff time matters.

Good programming should not require staff to reinvent the experience every week.

03

Anticipation matters.

The best experiences give residents something to return to, notice, and look forward to.

04

Evidence matters.

We use published research to inform our approach without overstating what the research says.

RESEARCH-INFORMED

Grounded in a growing body of research.

Published research has explored horticultural activities among older adults in areas including quality of life, mood, social interaction, physical function, cognition, and well-being.
